Land Art

Land Art (also called earth art or earthworks) emerged in the 1960s as artists, disillusioned by the rapidly commercializing art world, took to the land to make monumental earth-based art works. This art was a part of growing environmental awareness and bucked the contemporary notions of commodified art. Influenced by large prehistoric and indigenous art works, these artists sought to reconnect creativity and humanity to nature, ritual, and sacred practice.
